About Cow | Deer

Cow | Deer, a brand new wordless experimental play, comes to the Royal Court Theatre. Book Cow | Deer tickets on London Theatre.

Cow | Deer is a play that has been co-created by avant-garde director Katie Mitchell (Bluets, Anatomy of a Suicide), Nina Segal (Shooting Hedda Gabler, Big Guns), and Melanie Wilson (Oracle Song, Opera for the Unknown Woman) who is also the sound artist. The creative team also includes design by Alex Eales (East is South) and lighting design by Prema Mehta (Hamnet).

This isn’t Katie Mitchell’s first foray into experimental theatre—in 2024, she directed Bluets, also at The Royal Court Theatre. This production was an experimental staging of Maggie Nelson’s book meditating on the colour blue.

As The Guardian said, “Ultimately, it is an odd night at the theatre, but not an uninteresting one, and you cannot dismiss it as an abstruse experiment in itself. The first production to be programmed by the venue’s new artistic director, David Byrne, it suggests an intent to push mainstream theatre into edgier ground.”

The Royal Court Theatre is continuing to push the boundaries of what theatre can be in all the best ways. This production of Cow | Deer utilizes a team of four actors alongside foley artists to tell the story of a cow and a deer. This experimental production aims to decentre humans and explore our relationship with our environment and with animals.

Cow | Deer in London is a co-production with the National Theatre of Greece, and the University of Oxford supported its initial development.
