The funny and unsettling new production, Porn Play, makes its world premiere at the Royal Court Theatre. Book Porn Play tickets on London Theatre.
Porn Play in London tells the story of Ani, a talented young academic with a big secret. She’s addicted to violent pornography, and as everything around her begins to fall apart, will she be able to confront her uncontrollable desires?
Porn Play stars Ambika Mod, known for her roles in BBC’s This Is Going to Hurt, and Netflix’s One Day. In fact, she earned the Netflix New Talent award in the 2024 Women In Film & TV Awards.
“It’s something that you know deserves care, attention to detail and sensitivity in its portrayal, especially if it’s an addiction that we’re not used to seeing,” Mod said of her preparation for the role.
Starring alongside Mod is Olivier Award winner Will Close (Dear England), Lizzy Connolly (Pygmalion), and Asif Khan (A Man For All Seasons).
This production is written by Sophia Chetin-Leuner (This Might Not Be It) in her Royal Court debut. She explained that this play initially was being written to explore the effects of pornography on women, but throughout the years of development, it has become more intricate than she ever could have imagined. This play was shortlisted for the Soho Theatre’s Verity Bargate Award in 2022.
“Ever since I was a teenager, going to see plays at the Royal Court has shaped my ideals and purpose of who I want to be as a writer – so it’s a terrifying privilege to have Porn Play debuting here,” Chetin-Leuner said.
The boundary-pushing play is directed by Josie Rourke, who is the former artistic director of Donmar Warehouse and Bush Theatre. The creative team also includes designer Yimei Zhao, lighting designer Mark Henderson, movement director Wayne McGregor, and sound designer Helen Skiera.
