Beloved actor Martin Shaw, known for starring in Judge John Deed, Inspector George Gently, and The Professionals, as well as recent West End stage appearances in Hobson's Choice, The Best Man, and Twelve Angry Men, reprises the role of Sir Thomas More.
A Man for All Seasons is a play that tells a gripping story based on the real historical events of More, a scholar, ambassador, Lord Chancellor, and friend to King Henry VIII. More, a Catholic man of integrity and principle struggles when King Henry VIII seeks a divorce from Catherine of Aragon so that he can marry Anne Boleyn with the hope of fathering a male heir. He faces the ultimate challenge, choosing between his loyalty to the king and his conscience and morals.
The Guardian's review said of Shaw's performance, "Martin Shaw's finely tuned More is credible both as fallible human and as hero – loving to family and friends, exasperated by fools and villains, lawyerly in his discretion, firm in his adherence to conscience (well-known to television audiences as Judge John Deed, Shaw previously played More on stage in 2006)."
In addition to Shaw, the excellent cast includes Gary Wilmot, Edward Bennett, Abigail Cruttenden, Nicholas Day, Calum Finlay, Asif Khan, Hari Kang, Sam Parks, Sam Phillips, Louisa Sexton, Timothy Watson, Orlando James, and Huw Brentnall.
A Man for All Seasons in London is directed by Jonathan Church, who was the director of Chichester Festival Theatre for a decade and recently directed Shaw in Hobson's Choice. The creative team also includes set and costume design by Simon Higlett, lighting design by Mark Henderson, sound design by Paul Groothuis, and composition by Matthew Scott.
