About Bacchae

A bold new reimagining of the Greek classic Bacchae comes to the National Theatre for its world premiere. Book Bacchae tickets on London Theatre.

Bacchae is a play utilizing a combination of movement, music, spoken word, and rhyme to bring to life Euripides' tragedy in a whole new way. In this story, the Bacchae refuse to stand on the sidelines, allowing the men to have all the fun. Thebes better watch out for these stage-storming powerhouses. Meanwhile, Dionysos, their god, is participating in his family Olympics, intent on beating King Pentheus and showing all that he's more than just the god of rhyme, wine, and a good time.

Bacchae in London is led by James McArdle (Mare of Easttown), Clare Perkins (EastEnders), Ukweli Roach (Blindspot), and Sharon Small (The Inspector Lynley Mysteries).

This brand-new reimagining of a Greek classic is by writer Nima Taleghani. The production is the first show under the new National Theatre director, Indhu Rubasingham. The excellent creative team also includes set and costume designer Robert Jones, choreographer Kate Prince, lighting designer Oliver Fenwick, composer DJ Walde, sound designers Ben and Max Ringham, and fight director Kate Waters.

"I can't wait to get into the rehearsal room and create my first show as Director of The National Theatre, beginning this new chapter," Rubasingham said. "Nima's energetic retelling of Euripides' ancient tragedy is an exhilarating debut play, that will fill the amphitheatre of the Olivier with spoken word and rhyme. Bacchae will be a riot of words, music and movement."

This production will be filmed for an upcoming streaming release on the National Theatre at Home. Following its National Theatre run, it will tour secondary schools and colleges country-wide under the direction of Hannah Hauer-King.
