The Story is a play centered around a story of a white teacher being murdered in a Black neighbourhood, and four journalists begin competing to be the first to break the case. For each reporter, the investigation offers a chance to land a career-making story, but the pressure to be first to publish raises questions about what they are willing to overlook to get ahead.

As new information surfaces and complicates the original version of events, the journalists find themselves navigating a complex story about race, bias, and professional rivalry. The facts become much harder to parse, and the people reporting the case must decide whether telling the truth matters more than having the most interesting version of the story.

BAFTA Award-winner Letitia Wright, known for Black Panther, leads the cast as Yvonne in her National Theatre debut. Together, she is joined by Ashley Thomas as Neil, Lorraine Toussaint as Pat, Wilf Scolding as Jeff, Aliyah Odoffin as Latisha, Unique Spencer as Adrienne, and Antonia Bernath as Jessica Dunn.

The Story in London is directed by Clint Dyer, whose previous National Theatre work includes the Death of England series. The production also features set design by Anna Fleischle, costume design by Natalie Pryce, and lighting design by Paul Anderson.

Written by Tracey Scott Wilson and inspired by true events, The Story brings audiences into a competitive newsroom where every choice puts each journalist’s moral compass into question and could permanently shape public perception of the case. With careers on the line, this play lets audiences see what happens when prestige gets in the way of truth.
