About Entertaining Mr Sloane

The cult classic black comedy, Entertaining Mr Sloane, returns to London in its first major revival in 16 years. Book Entertaining Mr Sloane tickets on London Theatre.

Starring Tamzin Outhwaite (Abigail’s Party) as Kath and Jordan Stephens (Rizzle Kicks) as Mr Sloane, this play tells the tale of Kath, who decides to break up the monotony by taking in a lodger at her family home. When handsome young Mr Sloane moves in, both Kath and her brother Ed are captivated by this charismatic stranger; only their father holds some wariness. Soon things take a turn, leading to deceit and destruction that the family never saw coming.

Entertaining Mr Sloane in London has an excellent creative team at its helm, including director Nadia Fall (Abigail’s Party) in her first season as the Artistic Director at the Young Vic, set and costume designer Peter McKintosh (Trouble in Butetown), lighting designer Richard Howell (Othello), and sound designer Tingying Dong (London Tide).

In a statement, Nadia Fall said, “Jordan Stephens is an artistic polymath, from writing and screen to music and his campaigning. I’m incredibly excited to be directing his stage debut.”

Entertaining Mr Sloane is a play by Joe Orton that first premiered in 1964. Initially, the play led to outrage and offense, especially since, at the time, Lord Chamberlain was censoring scripts before their staging. As DC Theatre Arts reported, “Orton recalled with relish that the Lord Chamberlain had made him take out all the heterosexual naughty bits but left the homosexual ones behind—presumably not noticing they were there.”

Since the initial offense, this play of manipulation and seduction has become a beloved theatre classic. It has been staged countless times worldwide and earned a 1982 Drama Desk Award for Outstanding Revival, as well as a 1996 Lucille Lortel Award for Outstanding Revival.
