About Othello

Shakespeare’s magnificent play of love, betrayal, and jealous rage comes to life in an impassioned restaging at the Theatre Royal Haymarket. This iteration of Othello is being led by the talented Tony Award-winning director, Tom Morris (War Horse, Dr Semmelweis, The Grinning Man). Book Othello tickets on London Theatre.

Othello is a play that centers on a Moorish general in the Venetian army who learns from his ensign, Iago, that his wife, Desdemona, may have been involved in a torrid affair. As suspicions rise, immense feelings of jealousy and rage consume him, ultimately leading him to take the most drastic measures.

This smashing revival boasts a formidable cast, including David Harewood OBE (Homeland, Best of Enemies) as the title role, Tony Jones OBE (Mr Bates vs the Post Office, Detectorists) starring as Iago, and Caitlin FitzGerald (Succession, Masters of Sex) playing Desdemona. Joined by this impressive trio is Vinnette Robinson as Emilia, and Olivier Award-winning Luke Treadaway as Cassio.

Speaking to The Guardian regarding his return to the role of Othello after being the first black actor to star in the role at the National Theatre in 1997, Harewood said, “I’m looking forward to approaching it from the point of view of just another actor playing just another part. That perhaps gives me the freedom to explore it slightly differently.”

Othello in London is also made possible by the talented creative team, including the director Tom Morris (War Horse, Dr Semmelweis, The Grinning Man), music by PJ Harvey, sound design by Jon Nicholls, lighting design by Richard Howell, and costume supervisor Sabia Smith.

Morris’ Othello promises to bring this timeless story to a contemporary audience in a way that is engaging while remaining true to its source material with a vision that confronts toxic masculinity and the fragility of trust. Blended with Shakespeare’s expert poetry and magnificent performances, this staging of Othello is not something audiences are soon to forget.
