Bengal Tiger at the Baghdad Zoo is a play that tells the story of a Bengal tiger shot by a U.S. Marine in war-torn Baghdad. The tiger's ghost then haunts the soldier as the lives of the American Marines intertwine with an Iraqi translator and the ghost of the tiger. All are on the search for meaning and forgiveness amidst the wreckage.
This staging stars Sayyid Aki, Peter Forbes, Patrick Gibson, Ammar Haj Ahmad, Kathryn Hunter, Arinzé Kene, Sara Masry, and Hala Omran.
Bengal Tiger at the Baghdad Zoo in London also boasts an excellent creative team, which includes director Omar Elerian, set and costume designers Rajha Shakiry and Jackie Shemesh, sound designer Elena Peña, and hair and makeup supervisor Sarah-Jane Pucci.
This impactful black comedy premiered at Kirk Douglas Theatre in Culver City, California, in May 2009. Then, in the spring of 2011, the production opened on Broadway and was an immediate success. The play was nominated for six Drama Desk Awards, winning two, one for Outstanding Lighting Design in a Play and the other for Outstanding Sound Design of a Play. Bengal Tiger at the Baghdad Zoo was also nominated for three Tony Awards.
The play is written by Rajiv Joseph. It began simply as a 10-minute sketch written in graduate school following an article he had read about the fall of Baghdad, and U.S. bombs blowing open part of a zoo. He said, "Animals had escaped, people were looting the zoo and there were these soldiers that were stationed there." Those humble beginnings marked the start of the now beloved multi-award-winning play.
