In order to escape a city ruled by tyrannical law, four young lovers flee into the forest beyond its borders. Unfortunately, the woods they enter are far from a safe refuge. Here, the Fairy King and Queen, Oberon and Titania, are locked in a fierce battle over a stolen child, and their quarrel is throwing the natural world into utter chaos. Meanwhile, mischievous Puck roams freely, causing confusion and weaving desire into every human heart he stumbles upon. As day molds into night and snow begins to fall during summer, reason melts away and reality blurs into a waking dream.
This new staging illuminates the play’s darker undercurrents, the jealousy, the obsession, and the thin line between danger and that which is magical. Following the Globe and Headlong’s acclaimed 2022 collaboration in Henry V, directors Naeem Hayat and Holly Race Roughan come together to transform Shakespeare’s most magical comedy into a beautiful winter tale.
A Midsummer Night’s Dream in London boasts a formidable cast, led by Hedydd Dylan, Michael Marcus, and Sergo Vares. The play also boasts an exceptional creative team, including designer Max Johns, lighting designer Joshie Hariette, sound designer Nicola T Chang, and costume supervisor Jackie Orton.
More than a revival, A Midsummer Night’s Dream is a play that has been reimagined for the senses, where every whisper feels close enough to touch. Blurring fantasy and reality via candlelight, it’s a performance that reminds us why Shakespeare’s wildest comedy still has the power to both unsettle and enchant all those who come to watch this classic.
