About Jaja's African Hair Braiding

Step into a Harlem hair salon at the height of summer in Jaja's African Hair Braiding, a warm, hilarious play about the meaning behind sisterhood and the difficulties of immigration. Book Jaja's African Hair Braiding tickets on London Theatre.

Jaja's African Hair Braiding is a play by Jocelyn Bioh that unfolds over the course of one extremely hot summer day in the chaotic atmosphere of a single hair salon, where a tight-knit group of West African immigrant women transforms their clients' hair and their lives. At the same time, they weave through troubles of work, money, and love. As customers come and go, the characters interact with each other, ebbing and flowing as tempers flare and private hopes are revealed.

Beneath the humour and sweetness of sisterhood are women who are negotiating what it means to build lives in a country that isn't always so welcoming.

This incredible performance boasts a formidable cast, including Zainab Jah as Jaja and Sewa Zamba as her daughter Marie, alongside Dani Moseley, Renee Bailey, Babirye Bukilwa, Jadesola Odunjo, Dolapo Oni, Karene Peter, Bola Akeju, and Demmy Ladipo. The creative team includes director Monique Touko, set designer Paul Wills, costume designer Jessica Cabassa, lighting designer Simisola Majekodunmi, sound designer Tony Gayle, and wigs, hair, and make-up designer Cynthia De La Rosa.

Jaja's African Hair Braiding in London originally premiered on Broadway in 2023 and went on to receive five Tony Award nominations, winning two of them. This UK premiere expertly balances humour with deep emotional connection and political themes, while encouraging others to hope for their communities. This performance is surely one audiences won't want to miss as it hits the UK for the first time, bringing with it all its ups and downs and heartwarming moments.
