Experience the glitter of 18th-century France with Les Liaisons Dangereuses, Christopher Hampton’s bold adaptation of the classic novel, being revived at the National Theatre. Book Les Liaisons Dangereuses tickets on London Theatre.
Les Liaisons Dangereuses is a play adapted for the stage by Christopher Hampton from Pierre Choderlos de Laclos’ scandalous novel, bringing to life a world of seduction and ruthless strategic motives. At the heart of the drama are the Marquise de Merteuil and the Vicomte de Valmont, two former lovers and master-class conspirators who are playing a deadly game of seduction and cruelty. What begins as a move to hurt the innocent and stamp down the virtuous turns into a warped betrayal as the pair find that even they cannot control the web of lies and pain they have woven.
Marianne Elliott directs this bold National Theatre revival, with BAFTA Award-winning Lesley Manville as the Marquise de Merteuil and Aidan Turner as the Vicomte de Valmont. The pair is joined by a broader cast including Monica Barbaro as Madame de Tourvel, Gabrielle Drake as Madame de Rosemond, Darragh Hand as Chevalier Danceny, Cat Simmons as Madame de Volanges, and Hannah van der Westhuysen as Cécile Volanges. Alongside the company is a masterful creative team, including designer Rosanna Vize, costume designer Natalie Roar, composer Jasmin Kent Rodgman, and lighting designer James Farncombe.
Les Liaisons Dangereuses in London is elegant, erotic, and incredibly emotionally compelling with outstanding performances and a gripping story. It’s as dangerous as it is entertaining, with a seemingly contemporary understanding of power. Or, perhaps, it shows that people have not changed nearly as much as we would have hoped since the 18th century. Audiences are sure to be on the edge of their seat as an unwieldy, morally bankrupt duo is faced with their own undoing.
