Pride is a musical set in the summer of 1984, beginning as Britain is divided by great political strife: the miners’ strike and the growing fear of the burgeoning AIDS crisis. As Margaret Thatcher’s government battles the coal industry, 24-year-old Mark Ashton sees a connection between these two communities, who are facing great hostility not only from the political establishment but also from the press and authorities. He helps to found Lesbians and Gays Support the Miners, which is an alliance between LGBTQ+ activists in London and the pit communities in South Wales.

The musical is a heartwarming, cheeky story of solidarity among people who seemingly have nothing in common. As the activists raise money for the miners, the Welsh community slowly begins to open its hearts to them, and both groups discover that great strength can be gathered when you stand together for each other.

Pride in London is based on the 2014 hit film Pride, reuniting the film’s writer Stephen Beresford and director Matthew Warchus. Beresford writes the book and lyrics, while Warchus develops and directs the stage production. The music is by Christopher Nightingale, Josh Cohen, and DJ Walde, with original songs.

This production boasts a formidable cast, including Samuel Barnett as Jonathan, Lewis Cornay as Bromley, Matthew Durkan as Mike, Gillian Elisa as Gwen, Daniel Forrester as Mark, Alyn Hawke as Reggie, Robin Hayward as Martin, Chris Jenkins as Mike, Darren Lawrence as Cliff, and Kirsty Malpass as Hefina, alongside a larger ensemble company.

Pride is a fierce production that brings a remarkable piece of British history to life on stage in this musical about what it means to come together as a community, and how we can find a common thread between those around us.
