Kimberly Akimbo is a musical in which Kimberly Levaco, nearly 16 and newly arrived in New Jersey, tries to make sense of yet another family upheaval. She’s also living with a rare condition that causes her to age rapidly. Even though she’s still a teenager, Kimberly appears decades older than her peers, something that shapes how the world sees her, but not at all what she wants from her life.
At school, Kimberly finds friendship and the possibility of a first love after meeting Seth, a kind classmate from the local ice rink. At home, though, things are very unsteady. Her parents are facing difficulties, money is tight, and her ex-con aunt Debra arrives with a scheme that proves equally ridiculous and dangerous, tempting Kimberly into an adventure she may not be able to take back.
Kimberly Akimbo in London has a book and lyrics by David Lindsay-Abaire and music by Jeanine Tesori. The musical won five Tony Awards in 2023, including Best Musical, Best Book of a Musical, and Best Original Score. This new production marks the musical’s European premiere and is directed by Michael Longhurst.
Maria Friedman stars as Kimberly Levaco alongside Alice Fearn as Debra, Gilli Jones as Seth Weetis, Niamh Perry as Pattie Levaco, Peter Hannah as Buddy Levaco, Sara Hajizadeh as Teresa Benton, Ronav Jain as Aaron Puckett, Robin Simões da Silva as Martin Doaty, and Aviva Tulley as Delia McDaniels.
Funny and strange, Kimberly Akimbo will tug at your heartstrings. It is a musical about growing up with great differences and finding ways to exercise your youth and experience joy while racing against time.
