Journey across three centuries with one family's lineage through song and sacrifice with Ballad Lines, Finn Anderson (Islander), and Tania Azevedo's (But I'm a Cheerleader) devastatingly beautiful new folk musical as it makes its London premiere. Book Ballad Lines tickets on London Theatre.
At the heart of this tale lies Sarah, a queer woman living in New York City with her girlfriend Alix, who believes she has abandoned her childhood and its folk traditions. But when a long-forgotten ballad resurfaces, she finds herself drawn to the lives of the women who came before her. Through Cait, a minister's wife in 17th-century Scotland, and Jean, a young teenager in 18th-century Ireland, Ballad Lines beautifully constructs one family's journey across several generations, all held together by the same question: What is the cost of motherhood?
Ballad Lines is a musical that blends traditional Scottish, Irish, and Appalachian music with a contemporary score, and the musical tells a beautiful story about the nature of inheritance, the stories we tell ourselves about our identities, and the choices women have had to make for centuries when confronted with love and family. This is an emotionally complex performance that, while spanning continents and centuries, remains heartfelt.
Ballad Lines in London stars Frances McNamee as Sarah, Rebecca Trehearn as Betty, Sydney Sainté as Alix, Kirsty Findlay as Cait, and Yna Tresvalles as Jean, joined also by Ally Kennard, Gracie Lai, and Siân Louise Dowdalls. It also boasts a formidable creative team, including music director Shonagh Murray, set designer TK Hay, lighting by Simon Wilkinson, and sound design by Andy Johnson.
Heartwarming and full of melody, Ballad Lines is ultimately a musical about love and the inheritances we carry with us, whether we want to or not.
