Lavish in the atmosphere of High Society, Cole Porter’s dazzling musical comedy, fueled by scandal and second chances, returns to the Barbican in a smashing new summer revival. Book High Society tickets on London Theatre.
High Society is a musical based on Philip Barry’s The Philadelphia Story, as well as the beloved 1956 musical film. It follows Tracy Lord, a socialite, as she prepares to enter into a marriage with the most respectable George Kittredge. A wedding this spectacular could never proceed quietly, though, as Tracy’s ex-husband, C.K. Dexter Haven, never quite left the picture. As two nosy reporters arrive on the scene, sniffing around where they don’t belong on the hunt for trouble, the skeletons hiding in the Lord family estate’s closet begin to surface. As excitement for the joyous occasion builds, a great scandal is brewing under the surface.
This fabulous production stars Helen George as Tracy Lord, alongside Felicity Kendal, Freddie Fox, Julian Ovenden, Nigel Lindsay, Carly Mercedes Dyer, and Malcolm Sinclair. High Society in London also boasts a formidable creative team, including direction by Rachel Kavanaugh, music and lyrics by Cole Porter, book is by Arthur Kopit, set design by Tom Rogers, costume design by Jon Morrell, lighting design by Howard Hudson, and sound design by Adam Fisher.
The score blends songs that were written for the film as well as additional numbers for the play; audiences can anticipate a rich musical experience. High Society arrives on the stage with grand escapism and titillating drama. It’s an incredibly smart comedy that touches on themes of class and the entirely human experience of bearing secrets.
This is a show that is just as entertaining as it is thought-provoking. It invites you into a world seldom known, showing you the imperfections of true ‘high society.’
