Experience life with a Jewish, north London family as they are pushed to their breaking point in Ryan Craig’s The Holy Rosenbergs, a smashing revival of the 2011 play, returning to the London stage with a new kind of urgency. Book The Holy Rosenbergs tickets on London Theatre.
Set in 2009, The Holy Rosenbergs is a play that follows one Jewish family, the Rosenbergs, as they attempt to hold themselves together amid both personal and community upheaval. David, the father, is struggling to keep his family’s catering business from being plundered, while Lesley, the mother, tries to keep her household together despite the splintering. Their daughter, Ruth, is a successful lawyer working on a UN investigation into alleged war crimes committed in Gaza. She finds herself facing public condemnation during a time when their family needs unity the most. When another hardship cracks down on them, long-since-buried pain rises to the surface.
The Holy Rosenbergs in London is directed by Lindsay Posner and boasts a formidable cast, featuring Tracy-Ann Oberman (EastEnders, Friday Night Dinner) as Lesley, Nicholas Woodeson (The Mirror and The Light, The Rings of Power) as David, and Dorothea Myer-Bennett (Leopoldstadt, The Chelsea Detective) as Ruth. Alongside them are Dan Fredenburgh, Nitai Levi, Adrian Lukis, and Alex Zur.
Ryan Craig’s play premiered at the National Theatre in 2011, and this revival arrives at just the right moment, bringing with it questions about identity, community, and moral responsibility.
Set over one incredibly intense evening, The Holy Rosenbergs offers audiences a portrait of a family that is trying, and often failing, to reconcile love and conviction. The production has a powerful ensemble work that masterfully balances domestic humour with a tremendous ideological conflict.
