Follow Mother Courage as she trudges along with her cart through a broken world torn apart by war in Mother Courage and Her Children, Bertolt Brecht’s anti-war play at Shakespeare’s Globe. Book Mother Courage and Her Children tickets on London Theatre.
Mother Courage and Her Children is a play in which war is everywhere, and resources are rapidly depleting, making survival a business rather than a human right. Mother Courage has effectively learned how to live off conflict and sell what she can from her cart as she tries to keep herself and her children alive. But in Brecht’s world, every tiny victory comes at a great cost, and Courage’s determination to turn a profit brings her ever closer to losing everything she has.
This production marks the first time Shakespeare’s Globe has staged Brecht. Anna Jordan’s modern translation brings this story from a historical conflict into a more contemporary yet dystopian setting, where armies are divided by colour, and the structure of the war feels both ancient and so relevant. Mother Courage and Her Children asks very important questions about fascism and family, and what it means to be complicit in state horrors.
Michelle Terry, Artistic Director of Shakespeare’s Globe, leads the cast as Mother Courage. Alongside her, she is joined by Rawaed Asde as Swiss Cheese, Rachelle Diedericks as Kattrin, Vinnie Heaven as Eilif, Nadine Higgin as Yvette, Ferdy Roberts as Minister, Max Runham as Narrator, Nicolas Tennant as Chef, and more.
Alongside this formidable cast is a masterful creative team, including direction by Elle While, design by takis, music by James Maloney, and costume supervision by Karen Hopkinson. Mother Courage and Her Children in London is filled with original live music and smart humour, bringing Brecht’s anti-war masterpiece to life at the Globe with great force.
