Miss Saigon is a musical set in Saigon during the final days of the Vietnam War. It follows a 17-year-old girl named Kim, who is forced to work in a bar run by the opportunistic Engineer after she loses her home and her family.
There, she meets Chris, a young American GI preparing to leave Vietnam. The two find themselves falling in love, but the total collapse of Saigon tears them apart before they can even attempt to build the future they once imagined together.
Three years later, Kim is determined to find Chris. She is raising their son, whom Chris doesn’t even know he has, and she embarks on a difficult fight for survival while holding onto the hope that they might find themselves reunited after all.
Written by Alain Boublil and Claude-Michel Schönberg, Miss Saigon features music by Schönberg and lyrics by Richard Maltby Jr. and Boublil, with additional lyrics by Michael Mahler. The score includes songs such as “The Heat Is On in Saigon,” “The Movie in My Mind,” and “The American Dream.”
Jean-Pierre van der Spuy directs the new production, with choreography by Chrissie Cartwright and Carrie-Anne Ingrouille; set and costume design by Andrew D. Edwards; lighting by Bruno Poet; sound by Adam Fisher; and video design by George Reeve.
Returning to London more than a decade after its previous West End staging, Miss Saigon in London brings its story of true love and sacrifice back to the Prince Edward Theatre in a newly staged production. The production is sure to remind audiences that even in the face of hardship and isolation, love brings hope.
