Unpack love and infidelity in The Truth, Florian Zeller’s Olivier-nominated comedy about two couples and a tangled web of dishonesty running in the West End for a limited season. Book The Truth tickets on London Theatre.
The Truth is a play in which Michel is having an affair with Alice, who just happens to be married to his best friend, Paul. As Michel tries to keep his complicated double life hidden from his own wife, Laurence, and also from Paul, the truth becomes increasingly more difficult to conceal from those who are most important to him. Everyone seems to understand more than they’d like to let on, and every explanation given only creates more suspicion.
The Truth turns adultery into a comic puzzle that lays out deception and loyalty in an incredibly witty stage experience. It begs many questions: Is telling the truth always the right thing to do? And how much do people really want to know about the hidden parts of the ones they love?
The Truth in London is by Oscar-winning French writer Florian Zeller and is translated by Christopher Hampton. The production is directed by Lindsay Posner, who also staged the play’s English-language premiere at the Menier Chocolate Factory in 2016.
Tony Award-nominated Stephen Mangan returns to the London stage as Michel, with Ardal O’Hanlon as Paul, Sarah Hadland as Alice, and double Olivier Award-winner Janie Dee as Laurence. This production also features a masterful creative team: set and costume designer Lizzie Clachan, lighting designer Richard Howell, sound designer Adam Cork, and costume supervisor Joanna Coe.
This production is brilliantly witty, bringing a messy family comedy to the West End stage for a strictly limited season. It is surely a night at the theatre audiences will not want to miss.
