Thirty years after the film revolutionized British pop culture, Trainspotting: The Musical in London brings Renton, Sick Boy, Begbie, Spud, Tommy, and Kelly back to the stage. Set within a world struggling with addiction, class anger, and restlessness, the musical revisits Welsh’s characters with new songs and a darkly witty energy built for the West End.

In 1996, “Choose Life” sounded somewhat vexing. However, thirty years later, this musical presents us with the question of what this challenge means now, especially in a world where addiction has greatly changed shape and people struggle with powerlessness against it. This new interpretation of the source material explores the search for escape, especially for meaning, in a world that leaves many people feeling trapped and dejected.

Trainspotting: The Musical is a musical written by Irvine Welsh, featuring music and lyrics by Stephen McGuinness and Irvine Welsh. The production is staged and developed by Caroline Jay Ranger, with set and costume design by Colin Richmond, lighting design by Ian Scott, video design by Douglas O’Connell, and sound design by Rory Madden for Sonalyst.

This production boasts a formidable cast including Robbie Scott who is starring as Renton in his West End debut, Sheridan Townsley as Sick Boy, Kieran Andrew as Spud, Frankie O’Connor as Franco Begbie, Finlay Paul as Tommy, Yana Harris as Kelly, Rebecca McKinnis as Cathy Renton, Gordon Cooper as Davie Renton, Ashley J. Russell as Colleen, Rosie Dignan as Alison, and Sophie Hutchinson as Lizzie.

This production is loud and confrontational, giving Welsh’s world a new form while breathing fresh life into it without doing away with any of its danger.
