Jesus Christ Superstar is a musical by Tim Rice and Andrew Lloyd Webber that follows Jesus Christ in the final weeks of his life, seen through the eyes of Judas Iscariot. The story is told entirely through song as it explores the relationships Jesus held with Judas, Mary Magdalene, the disciples, Jesus’ followers, and the Roman Empire as political pressure and great betrayal build toward his crucifixion.
The legendary score of this show reflects the long-held rock roots that defined an entire generation. Originally released as a concept album, the musical first opened on Broadway in 1971 before arriving in the West End the following year, where its original London production ran for more than 8 years.
