About Tru
Watch Jesse Tyler Ferguson transform into Truman Capote in Tru, Jay Presson Allen’s one-man drama about the celebrated writer at a pivotal moment of scandal and isolation at the Menier Chocolate Factory. Book Tru tickets on London Theatre.
Tru is a play set in December 1975, and Truman Capote is alone in his New York apartment. He was once surrounded by some of the most powerful, wealthiest people in society, and now the author of Breakfast at Tiffany’s and In Cold Blood has found himself shut out of the world he helped document.
The newfound ostracisation follows the publication of material from Answered Prayers, Capote’s novel he had been planning for some time, inspired by the lives and secrets of those in his closest circle. His writings about his very wealthy friends, though disguised, caused great outrage and left the writer to confront the consequences of exposing his social circle.
Over the course of the play, Capote looks back on his career, the decisions he made, the relationships he held, the successes and the mistakes, all while struggling with intense loneliness accompanied by alcoholism and addiction. Jay Presson Allen constructs the piece from Capote’s own words, allowing audiences to spend an evening in his company.
Tony Award-winning Jesse Tyler Ferguson takes on the role following a sold-out New York run. Best known for his on-screen role in Modern Family, Ferguson won a Tony Award for Take Me Out and most recently appeared in London in Here We Are and Jesus Christ Superstar.
Tru in London is directed by Rob Ashford, with set design by Paul Farnsworth. Following its smashing New York staging, Tru brings Capote’s wit and vulnerability to the London stage in the intimate Menier Chocolate Factory. Audiences are sure to experience a meaningful night of theatre as they are brought into the inner world of a beloved writer.

I knew nothing about the show or Truman Capote going in but found myself deeply drawn to this portrayal of his story. This is my second show at the chocolate factory and I honestly couldn’t believe it was the same venue, the admission price was worth it just for the feeling of entering the theatre.
Incredible performance and set, was enthralled by the acting but narrative arc felt a bit all over the place
