About Charlie and the Chocolate Factory

Charlie and the Chocolate Factory is a musical about a boy named Charlie Bucket who dreams of a world greater than his ordinary life. For Charlie, everything changes when he finds one of five Golden Tickets hidden inside Willy Wonka’s famous chocolate bars. The prize grants Charlie and the other lucky winners access to the factory that has fascinated the world from behind its formidable gates.
Joined by Grandpa Joe, Charlie explores the extraordinary candy factory, filled with chocolate rivers, unusual inventions, Oompa-Loompas, and tasty candies. But the factory proves far more unpredictable than its young visitors expected. As Augustus Gloop, Veruca Salt, Violet Beauregarde, and Mike Teavee encounter Wonka’s creations, their poor behaviour lands them in unusual situations.
Michael Ball stars as the eccentric candy-maker Willy Wonka. The two-time Olivier Award winner’s extensive musical theatre credits include Hairspray, Sweeney Todd, Les Misérables, Chess, and Chitty Chitty Bang Bang.
David Greig provides the musical’s book, with an original score by Hairspray songwriters Marc Shaiman and Scott Wittman. The production also features many songs written by Leslie Bricusse and Anthony Newley for the beloved 1971 film.
Nikolai Foster directs this new staging, with choreography by Ebony Molina, set design by Leslie Travers, costumes by Katrina Lindsay, lighting by Ben Cracknell, sound by Adam Fisher, illusions by Chris Fisher, and puppetry by Rachael Canning.
Charlie and the Chocolate Factory in London is filled with tremendous spectacle and fantastical inventions, inviting audiences through Wonka’s gates for a brand-new version of Roald Dahl’s famous adventure.
