Tina Turner's story was previously presented in the film 'What's Love Got to Do with It?' directed by Brian Gibson. Released in 1993 it starred Angela Bassett as Tina Turner and Laurence Fishburne as Ike Turner.

The stage musical Soul Sister was devised by John Miller and Pete Brooks and produced by Bill Kenwright and John Miller.
