Stage legend Ian McKellen is set to bring his brilliant one-man show, titled Shakespeare, Tolkien, Others and You, to the West End for a limited run of performances at the Harold Pinter Theatre.

Having toured the show to venues all across the country in celebration of his 80th birthday, this theatre treat is set to be one of the most sought-after tickets in the West End.

Make sure you know what the show is about, who McKellen is bringing the show to London, and how you can buy tickets for the West End run right here.

What is the show?

One of Ian McKellen's first theatre memories is performing a production of Hamlet in his family living room at the age of eight with a Toy Theatre and cardboard cut-outs.

From there, he went on to become one of theatre's most celebrated Shakespeare actors of his generation. From his wealth of knowledge, he devised a one-man show titled Acting Shakespeare, in which he would perform a selection of monologues from the Bard's plays, interspersed with anecdotes from his experience.

His upcoming West End show features a similar format, with Shakespeare monologues and personal stories, but that's only a part of the show.

McKellen will also share thoughts and stories from performing some of his most iconic roles, including Gandalf in The Lord of the Rings trilogy, supervillain Magneto in the X-Men films, and even from his stint as a panto dame.

The actor is also keen to involve the audience in the show, and has been known to offer audience members the opportunity to act with him on stage.

When is it coming to London?

The show has been touring the UK since the beginning of 2019, in celebration of McKellen's 80th birthday. He toured the production to theatres that were very personal to him, such as the Royal Shakespeare Company in Stratford-upon-Avon, where he used to camp and watch productions, and his childhood local theatre, the Wigan Little Theatre.

In London, the production sold-out to a number of London houses, including the Old Vic, the Young Vic, the Hampstead Theatre, Theatre Royal Stratford East, and a number of West End houses for one-off performances.

Ian McKellen On Stage will now play an extended run in London's West End at the Harold Pinter Theatre from 20th September 2019 to 5th January 2020.

Will it be the last time to see Ian McKellen perform Shakespeare?

Possibly. Last year, during press interviews for his performance in King Lear in London, McKellen hinted that that could be his final major Shakespearean role.

If that is the case, then this may be the best chance to see Ian McKellen masterfully perform Shakespeare's work.
