Who is Tom Hiddleston?
Tom Hiddleston has become a recognisable name all over the world, with award-winning performances in Thor as the villain Loki, as well as playing Jonathan Pine in the BBC drama The Night Manager. While he is known for his film and television performances, Hiddleston has taken to the stage on numerous occasions. His professional stage career began in 2007, starring in Cymbeline as Posthumus Leonatus and Cloten, later winning an Olivier Award for best newcomer in a play for his performance. In 2017, he played the eponymous role in Hamlet at an exclusive production of the Shakespeare play, directed by Kenneth Branagh.
After a break from the theatre, Tom Hiddleston returns to the stage in 2019 to star in Betrayal.
What is Betrayal?
Betrayal is a Harold Pinter play, first performed at the National Theatre in 1978. The story concerns the role of love, lust and intimacy as relationships begin to crumble. Told in reverse chronological order, audiences meet Emma and Jerry at a pub for the first time since their extra-marital affair. As the scenes unfold, Betrayal taps into how their behaviour affected their marriages, with characters confessing and betraying the people closest to them while admitting their mistakes.
Since the first performance in 1978, Betrayal has been revived twice on London stages. In 1991, a cast including Bill Nighy and Cheryl Campbell performed this Pinter classic at the Almeida Theatre. Most recently, the show ran in 2011 at the Comedy Theatre, starring Kristin Scott Thomas and Ben Miles.
Betrayal marks the end of the Pinter at the Pinter season, honouring British playwright Harold Pinter. Throughout the season, 20 of his plays are being performed at the posthumously named theatre, with many of Pinter's friends and colleagues taking to the stage.
What is the Pinter at the Pinter season?
Pinter at the Pinter is a one-of-a-kind theatrical event, where all twenty short plays written by Harold Pinter will be performed in a groundbreaking season of theatre. From September 2018, the Harold Pinter Theatre has come alive with Harold Pinter's works, acted out by a line up including Russell Tovey and David Suchet.
As well as his famous pieces, Harold Pinter's newly-discovered satirical sketch will receive its West End premiere.
