The Lieutenant of Inishmore Information

Michael Grandage directs a brand new production of Martin McDonagh's play The Lieutenant of Inishmore, starring Poldark's Aidan Turner at London's Noel Coward Theatre.

McDonagh's black comedy play is set in County Galway, Ireland in 1993 as the Northern Ireland peace process gets underway. The play follows Padraic, who is part of the INLA, a splinter group of the IRA, whose methods prove too extreme and violent for the group. The play has been described as McDonagh's best work.

The play premiered at the Other Place Theatre in Stratford-Upon-Avon in 2001, before running at the Barbican and the Garrick Theatre in 2002. It opened in London at the Noel Coward Theatre on 24th June and will run until 8th September.

Michael Grandage's new production will star Aidan Turner, best-known for his role in the BBC series Poldark, who will be making his West End debut. Turner has previously appeared in The Hobbit film trilogy and drama series Being Human, and has appeared on stage in many productions in Ireland, as well as Seán O'Casey's The Plough and the Stars at the Barbican.

Produced by Michael Grandage Company, The Lieutenant of Inishmore has set and costume designs by Christopher Oram, lighting by Neil Austin, and sound and music by Adam Cork.

Who knocked Mad Padraic's cat over on a lonely road on the island of Inishmore and was it an accident? He'll want to know when he gets back from a stint of torture and chip-shop bombing in Northern Ireland: he loves that cat more than life itself.
