It's hard not to fall for Little Women, Louisa May Alcott's seminal novel about four sisters coming of age in New England in the 1800's. The story has everything you want from a nostalgic tale: sisterhood, adventure, romance, sorrow, and the right amount of whimsy. Which is why it's so disappointing that the musical adaptation, from composer Jason Howland, lyricist Mindi Dickstein, and book writer Allan Knee, falls so flat. Little Women The Musical Information
Generations of readers have enjoyed Little Women, the timeless, coming-of-age story of four sisters growing up in Civil War America. Now you can spend an evening with the March sisters, as Little Women makes its London premiere at the Park Theatre. Little Women tickets are available on London Theatre now.
Little Women follows the March sisters: Jo, Meg, Beth and Amy. Even though Jo’s the second eldest, she’s a headstrong young woman who dreams of being a professional writer. In her stories, Jo weaves her family upbringing and finding womanhood with the revolutionary era as a backdrop. Just like the Little Women book, the musical adaptation is a tale of self-discovery, heartache and what it means to find everlasting love.
The Little Women musical is based on Louisa May Alcott’s 19th-century story of the same. Little Women has been adapted by Allan Knee, with music by Jason Howland and lyrics by Mindi Dickstein. Little Women opened on Broadway in 2005, starring Sutton Foster as Jo, who earned a Tony Award nomination for her role. The musical has since been revived in New York in 2019, starring Kate Hamill and Kristolyn Lloyd. Read a review of Little Women in New York here.
These little women have definitely found their feet in Europe too. However the story hasn’t always been told in English. Instead, a German adaptation premiered in Austria, and it was called “Beth und ihre Schwestern" — translating from German as “Beth and her sisters.”
Like most Broadway musicals though, Little Women has now found its place in the UK theatre scene. Little Women received its UK premiere in Manchester in 2017, and now Little Women London performances are at the Park Theatre. Little Women is a combination of the original story paired with ballads that will lift your soul and make your heart sing.
