About Cyrano de Bergerac

James McAvoy reprises his Olivier-nominated role in the new production of Edmond Rostand's classic play Cyrano de Bergerac, which is freely adapted by Martin Crimp and directed by Jamie Lloyd. Cyrano de Bergerac will run at the Harold Pinter Theatre for five weeks. Cyrano de Bergerac tickets are available on London Theatre now.

The Cyrano de Bergerac play is originally by Edmond Rostand. The late 19th-century play dramatises the life of its titular character, a 17th-century French playwright and author whose nose has plagued his love life.

This latest adaptation stars James McAvoy, who reunites with director Lloyd in Cyrano de Bergerac. McAvoy received an Olivier Award nomination for Best Actor in 2020, so all theatre fans will be queuing up to see McAvoy take on the iconic role. McAvoy’s other West End credits include The Ruling Class, Three Days of Rain at the Apollo Theatre, and Breathing Corpses at the Royal Court.

Cyrano de Bergerac is adapted by Martin Crimp, whose recent London productions include When We Have Sufficiently Tortured Each Other at the National Theatre, The Treatment at the Almeida Theatre, and In the Republic of Happiness at the Royal Court Theatre. Jamie Lloyd directs Cyrano de Bergerac, having previously worked on Betrayal and Evita.

In a 2019 review of Cyrano de Bergerac for London Theatre, our critic said: “It's presented as a live poetry jam night, with characters stepping up to microphones to deliver their speeches, or otherwise amplified throughout. Lloyd and his diverse company are so totally committed to it that resistance becomes futile, and you go with the flow.”
