About Idiots Assemble: Spitting Image The Musical

See the world’s most famous people, in puppet form, all in one place — the West End. Watch Hollywood icons and British stars sing and dance in Al Murray, Matt Forde, and Sean Foley’s satirical hit. Idiots Assemble: Spitting Image The Musical tickets are available on London Theatre now.

The Spitting Image series was a staple of 1980s television. In its heyday, the show won 10 BAFTAs and two Emmy Awards, with audiences loving the sardonic take on current affairs. No famous person was left unscathed: the Royal Family, prime ministers, and political figures were key figures mocked in the show. Spitting Image returned in 2020, with Boris Johnson and Donald Trump taking centre stage.

In the Spitting Image musical, witness over 100 celebrities parade in puppet form. The eccentric show sees King Charles III task Tom Cruise to create a “magnificent seven” of celebrity misfits to protect the United Kingdom from dark forces. Greta Thunberg, Meghan Markle, Tyson Fury, RuPaul, Angela Rayner, and Idris Elba make up the puppet Avengers. But, they're not the only famous faces: Ant and Dec, Vladimir Putin, Elon Musk, and Ian McKellen all make an appearance.

As Spitting Image in London relies on current events, it’s likely that elements of the storyline will change based on recent press coverage. Put down the newspaper, turn off your phone, and keep up to date with recent news at the theatre.

What are Spitting Image puppets made out of?

The Spitting Image puppets are made out of a mixture of clay, latex, and fibreglass. The two-week process starts off with each puppet as a caricature drawing. They’re then sent to a sculptor who renders a 3D version in clay that is used to create a fibreglass mould. Latex foam is then sprayed and applied to the mould to create a head. Add the finishing touches: fibreglass skulls, glass eyes, and paint and wigs, and the Spitting Image puppet is ready for the spotlight.
