About Pacific Overtures

Experience one of Stephen Sondheim's most ambitious musicals, Pacific Overtures, at the Menier Chocolate Factory. Book your tickets for Pacific Overtures in London on London Theatre.

Pacific Overtures follows Japan's 1853 encounter with the West when Commodore Perry and the Americans disrupt the once-isolated nation with its timeless traditions. Depicted through a Western lens but enacted with an Eastern touch, the musical explores the impact of new ideas on Japan's centuries of peaceful isolation.

The iconic American composer and lyricist Stephen Sondheim left an indelible mark on musical theatre, earning eight Tony Awards and a Pulitzer Prize. His acclaimed works include Sweeney Todd, Into the Woods, and Company. The score of Pacific Overtures features some of Sondheim's finest melodies, including "Someone in a Tree," "Pretty Lady," and "A Bowler Hat." In 2023, a new production of Pacific Overtures emerged in Japan, co-produced by the Umeda Arts Theater in Osaka and London's Menier Chocolate Factory. The production incorporated Sondheim and Weidman's 2017 revisions, featuring an all-Japanese cast. The show will now play at the Menier Chocolate Factory for a limited time.

Pacific Overtures is Sondheim’s ninth musical and is hailed as his most distinctive and vital work, earning two Tony Awards and an Olivier Award. The Menier completes its trilogy of Sondheim/Weidman musicals, following acclaimed productions of Assassins and Road Show.

Matthew White directs alongside set designer Paul Farnsworth, costume designer Ayaoka Maeda, sound designer Gregory Clarke, choreographer Ashley Nottingham, musical supervisor Catherine Jayes, and orchestrator Jonathan Tunick.
