Forsyte Saga Part 1: Irene is a play based on The Forsyte Saga, a series of three novels and two interludes by John Galsworthy. Galsworthy won the 1932 Nobel Prize in Literature for The Forsyte Saga, and since then, it has been adapted for various media, including in 1967 when it was televised by the BBC, and in 2002 when ITV serialized the series.

This play is the first of two plays that tell the story of the incredibly wealthy Soames Forstye and his wife Irene, whom he considers his prized possession. When Irene falls for an architect, cracks form in their relationship, and it’s the beginning of a scandal that, many years later, their daughter Fleur is forced to confront. This tale spans from the Victorian era to the beginning of the 1920s as it explores the possessive patriarchy, class, sex, and power. These two plays will be performed across alternate nights, with consecutive runs on matinee days.

Forsyte Saga Part 1: Irene in London stars Fiona Hampton (Touching the Void) as Irene Forsyte, Joseph Millson (Noises Off) as Soames Forsyte, and Flora Spencer-Longhurst (Amelie) as Fleur Forsyte. The exceptional cast also includes Emma Amos (The Stand Up Sketch Show), Nigel Hastings (And Then Come the Night Jars), Michael Lumsden (The Archers), Florence Roberts (BU21), Andy Rush (Casualty), and Jamie Wilkes (His Dark Materials).

Shaun McKenna and Lin Coghlan, who adapted the novels for BBC Radio 4 in 2016, have adapted the two-part play. The creative team also includes director Josh Roche (Orlando), set and costume designer Anna Yates (Glee & Me), lighting designer Alex Musgrave (Tasting Notes), sound designer and composer Max Pappenheim (Blackout Songs), and movement director Patrice Bowler (Macbeth).
