About Bluets

Maggie Nelson's critically acclaimed prose and poetry hybrid book, Bluets, has been adapted for the stage and is coming to the West End in a heart-touching play about depression, heartbreak, and the colour blue. Book Bluets tickets on London Theatre.

Bluets in London has an incredibly talented cast, including Ben Whishaw, who is the voice of Paddington in the Paddington movies; Emma D'Arcy, who played Princess Rhaenyra Targaryen in House of the Dragon; and Kayla Meikle, who played DS Liz Willan in The Girl Before.

"The Royal Court is a theatre I always feel excited to enter. I'm so thrilled to have this chance to perform there again with two performers Emma D'Arcy and Kayla Meikle I find just extraordinary,” Whishaw said in a statement. “I haven’t been on a stage since before the pandemic so I’m a little nervous — but very happy indeed to be sharing with people Margaret Perry’s completely beautiful adaptation of Maggie Nelson’s great, great book Bluets."

Bluets was originally developed at Deutsches Schauspielhaus Hamburg in 2019. Katie Mitchell (The Seagull, Anatomy of a Suicide) directed the original 2019 run and is now directing the West End show as well.

This first-person narrator play uniquely connects the audience to the characters' thoughts and feelings throughout the story of the narrator's love for blue and the feelings associated with the colour. They endure heartbreak and depression and draw inspiration from artists like Joni Mitchell and Andy Warhol.

The stripped-down set design allows the actor's talents to be on full display throughout the journey of love, loss, and desire centered around the enduring love for the colour blue.
