About People, Places & Things

The original production of the modern classic People, Places & Things returns to the West End for a limited run. It is a powerful exploration of addiction, led by its original Olivier-winning star, Denise Gough. Book People, Places & Things tickets on London Theatre today.

The Olivier Award-nominated play People, Places & Things was first performed at the National Theatre in 2015, followed by a West End transfer and a limited run at New York’s St Ann’s Warehouse (six Drama Desk Award nominations).

Duncan Macmillan’s incisive play is directed by former Headlong artistic director Jeremy Herrin (A Mirror, Wolf Hall, This House), and the stylish production is designed by Bunny Christie (Guys & Dolls, The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time).

Denise Gough won Olivier and Critics’ Circle Awards for her performance as Emma, an actress who struggles to distinguish reality from fantasy and takes refuge in drugs and alcohol. One of the most celebrated actresses of her generation, Gough won a second Olivier Award for her performance in Angels in America at the National Theatre, and was nominated for a Tony Award for the Broadway transfer. On screen, Gough was nominated for a Best Actress BAFTA TV Award for ITV’s Too Close, and is known for her role as Dedra Meero in Star Wars prequel spinoff Andor.

London Theatre’s five-star review of the 2016 West End run admired how Gough “steals this fierce, uncompromising play with a heart-stopping intensity” and observed that “the play, though it is undeniably harrowing and hard to watch at times, is so full of empathy and feeling that — like the 12 Steps themselves— it works when you embrace it.”

Moving, Brilliant acting, Dark humour, Captivating, Clever

See it if You enjoy outstanding acting that’s authentic and raw; delivering an emotional punch with perfect use of dark humour and language.

Don’t see it if You don’t like dramatic staging or may be triggered by the subject matter of addiction or explicit language. It doesn’t hold back.
