About The Unbelievers

The Unbelievers is a brand new show by playwright Nick Payne (Constellations, We Live in Time) and directed by Tony and Olivier Award-winning Marianne Elliott (The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time, Angels in America). Book The Unbelievers tickets on London Theatre.

At the centre of The Unbelievers is the wonderful Olivier Award-winning Nicola Walker (Unforgotten, The Split), who plays the role of a mother whose teenage son has vanished without a trace. Seven years later, time seems to collapse in on itself, and lines blur as she relives every moment of his absence. Utterly poetic and emotionally devastating, Payne’s play provokes one to ask oneself a question: how can we continue when our world falls apart?

Director Marianne Elliott recently said in a statement, "I am… thrilled to be returning with this honest exploration of motherhood by Nick Payne—something we see quite rarely in my opinion. This continues my long association with designer Bunny Christie and actor Nicola Walker. I cannot wait to get started!”

The Unbelievers is a play that boasts a formidable cast, in addiiton to Nicola Walker the cast includes, Ella Lily Hyland, Paul Higgins, Esh Alladi, Alby Baldwin, Harry Kershaw, Martin Marquez, Lucy Thackeray, and Isabel Adomakoh Young.

This show also unites a exceptional creative team, including director Marianne Elliott, designer Bunny Christie, costume design by Lucy Walshaw, lighting by Jack Knowles, and sound design by Nicola T. Chang.

Running this autumn, The Unbelievers in London will mark Payne’s newest show at the Royal Court since his play Constellations. The Unbelievers is a story of resilience, inner strength, and the lengths a mother will go for their child. This play promises to be one of the season’s most brilliant premieres.
