The Lady from the Sea is a play that tells the story of a woman who fears she has settled too easily with her marriage to a successful doctor. However, when a former lover shows up at her remote home, she has to choose between the life she has now and the life she gave up years ago.
This timeless drama stars Oscar-winning Alicia Vikander (The Danish Girl, Ex Machina) making her theatre debut, and Andrew Lincoln (Love Actually, The Walking Dead). The cast also includes Joe Alwyn, Gracie Oddie-James, Brendan Cowell, Isobel Akuwudike, and John Macmillan.
Vikander said, “Ibsen was one of the first playwrights I was introduced to, and his plays have always spoken to me on a deeply personal level, so it felt right that The Lady from the Sea should be my theatre debut.”
The Lady from the Sea in London is adapted and staged by Simon Stone (Yerma, Phaedra).
Stone said, “I’m over the moon to have found a new London home in the beautiful Bridge Theatre. The space is exhilarating, versatile, and incredibly intimate. Alicia was born to play this role. She grew up watching Ibsen in his original language. His myths course through her veins. She’s totally mesmerising to watch inhabit a character. The truth emanates from her.”
This powerful play was written by Henrik Ibsen in 1888. Since then, it’s been staged numerous times, including the last major London production at Donmar in 2017.
