Step back into 1946 Mississippi with Marie and Rosetta, a thrilling, show-stopping play with music about the gospel queen Sister Rosetta Tharpe and her electric duoship with Marie Knight, starring Olivier-award winning Beverley Knight as well as Ntombizodwa Ndlovu. Book Marie and Rosetta tickets on London Theatre.
In the state of Mississippi, Sister Rosetta Tharpe is already a great musical success—she’s an extraordinary guitarist and singer who is shaking up the gospel world with rhythm and blues. But her success doesn’t come without complaint, and now she needs something new. That’s where Marie Knight comes in, a young woman and singer with a true to heart church-tone and a future she can’t even fathom for herself.
This intimate two-person show captures the rehearsal that becomes the turning point for both of them. Rosetta must convince Marie to join her on a tour through a segregated American South, and she must teach her to loosen up her Church-going ways into something with a little more heat.
Along the way, their relationship deepens, and themes of ambition and principles collide as these two women negotiate their way through faith and fame.
Marie and Rosetta is a play with music written by George Brant and directed by Monique Touko. Alongside the two-person cast is a formidable creative team including set designer Lily Arnold, costume designer Jodie-Simone Howe, sound designer Tony Gayle, and intimacy director Bethan Clark.
Between stories and productive sparring, song is interlaced through dialogue in ways that feel sacred and necessary. With live musicians and a robust soundtrack including songs such as “Didn’t It Rain” and “Peace in the Valley,” Marie and Rosetta in London captures the absolute thrill of performing face-to-face, as though the room itself has become a house of God. Audiences will enjoy a musical-experience of a lifetime in this truly heart-warming play.
