Be enveloped in this moving true story about love and the tender cost of it as Hugh Bonneville (Downton Abbey, Paddington, Twenty Twelve) stars as C.S. Lewis alongside Maggie Siff (Mad Men, Sons of Anarchy, Billions) as Joy Davidman in Shadowlands, a gorgeous play directed by Rachel Kavanaugh. Book Shadowlands tickets on London Theatre.
Based on real events, Shadowlands traces C.S. Lewis’ journey from an academic to a man transformed by devotion, love, and loss. When Joy Davidman enters Lewis’s life, his assumptions about faith and the price of suffering are tested in ways he never expected. Interwoven in the story is the exploration of the bond Lewis had with his brother, Warren Lewis.
Shadowlands is a play that explores grief with great depth. C.S. Lewis was a man who preached that one should approach suffering and loss with patience, but it’s not so easy to heed such advice when the love of your life passes from a brutal illness.
Written by William Nicholson, Shadowlands was adapted to the stage from his own 1985 BAFTA Award-winning film Shadowlands. The 1989 play became a major success, earning the Evening Standard Award for Best Play, and was transferred to Broadway. It would later grace screens again in 1993 in Richard Attenborough’s feature film, which starred Anthony Hopkins and Debra Winger.
Shadowlands boasts a masterful cast, led by Hugh Bonneville and Maggie Siff. Alongside them is the rich creative team, including director Rachel Kavanaugh, designer Peter McKintosh, lighting designer Howard Harrison, sound designer Fergus O’Hare, and casting by Annelie Powell CDG and Jim Carnahan.
Shadowlands in London follows a sold-out run and will be playing for a strictly limited time at the Aldwych Theatre. This play is witty and incredibly tender, an uplifting reminder that while love may not protect us from pain, it can still be the very thing that changes us for the better.
