About Sweetmeats

The world premiere of Sweetmeats, a brand new play by Karim Khan (Brown Boys Swim), comes to Bush Theatre as a co-production with Tara Theatre. Book Sweetmeats tickets on London Theatre.

Sweetmeats is a play that tells the story of an unexpected love between two South Asian elders, Hema and Liaquat. The two meet at a course for those dealing with Type 2 diabetes, and while Hema is determined not to have any sweets, Liaquat encourages her to embrace life’s pleasures. As the two help each other on their journeys, a surprising love begins to form.

Bringing this intimate tale to life are Shobu Kapoor (EastEnders) as Hema and Rehan Sheikh (Inkaar) as Liaquat.

As writer, Karim Khan, said, “I wanted to centre a generation of South Asians that we rarely see on our stages - our elders - and make them the main characters of their own love story, as they navigate blood sugar levels, hypo snacks and metformin.”

Sweetmeats in London also boasts a talented creative team, including the Tara Theatre Artistic Director Natasha Kathi-Chandra, set and costume design by Aldo Vázquez, lighting design by Simeon Miller, movement direction by Mateus Daniel, sound design by Hugh Sheehan, and composer Amrit Kaur Lohia.

“It is necessary and urgent to expand the canon of British Theatre to include more than one type of South Asian story,” Kathi-Chandra said. “For this final show, we look at two older voices from the diaspora communities living in the UK, inviting audiences into the rich journeys of their lives.”

This powerful world premiere is guaranteed to pull at the audience's heartstrings as they watch a beautiful love story unfold in an improbable place.
