About White Rabbit Red Rabbit

“So I have just opened the envelope. I’ve begun to read… and I have no idea what’s going to happen.”

What happens when no one knows what comes next?

Iranian playwright Nassim Soleimanpour’s internationally acclaimed theatrical experiment White Rabbit Red Rabbit returns to London for its 15th anniversary, with a rotating cast including David Tennant, Riz Ahmed and Kathryn Hunter, and more to be announced.

Since its premiere in 2011, the play has been translated into more than 30 languages and performed over 3,000 times by some of the most celebrated names in theatre and film. Fifteen years on, its questions feel as urgent as ever, as it returns to the West End alongside the launch of There & Then, the new theatre company behind the production, created by Soleimanpour and director Omar Elerian.

Each performance begins with an envelope. Inside is a script the actor has never seen, that they must perform without rehearsal or a director. The play unfolds live, shaped entirely by how the author’s words compel that evening’s performer to respond. Each night brings a new energy as the actor steps into the unknown, creating a singular, unrepeatable theatrical experience.

Forbidden to leave his country at the time of writing, Soleimanpour distilled the experience of an entire generation into a work that is utterly original. At once playful, poignant, and unsettling, White Rabbit Red Rabbit asks questions about obedience, choice, and freedom of expression. The result is a play that is a play that is as much about contemporary Iran as it is about power, complicity, and the fragile contract between performer and audience - anywhere in the world.

Interesting way of telling the story and making you think. Nice concept and opens up a discussion after with people you watched it with.

Although White Rabbit Red Rabbit is a very unique and experimental play, with a big impact that kept us talking, it is very dependent on the chosen actor of the night and audience participation. We found the Duchess Theatre just a bit too large for this play and would have found it more effective in a smaller more intimate venue with a more engaged audience. This play deals with heavy topics and will make you uncomfortable at times, but also forces you to think about issues and how you would respond in these scenarios. Go in with an open mind and be ready to engage, but don’t choose this if you want to sit back and be wowed and entertained.
