John Proctor is the Villain is a play set in a rural Georgia high school in 2018, where an English class studies Arthur Miller’s The Crucible. But despite what the pages of the American classic say, the students are struggling with their own relationships to sex, friendship, connection, and the change in conversations brought about by the #MeToo movement.

Five teenage girls reconsider the lessons they’ve been taught about John Proctor’s legacy, the man traditionally positioned as the hero of Miller’s play. As the truth begins to surface within their community, the discussions surrounding literature become very personal very quickly. Soon, the young women begin to challenge not only the story in front of them, but also the assumptions made about power and gender that have seemingly shaped their world.

Kimberly Belflower’s play brings music, humour, and female friendship into a story about what can happen when young people begin to question the status quo that previously felt unquestionable.

Tony Award winner Danya Taymor directs the West End production following its acclaimed runs on Broadway and at the Royal Court Theatre. The creative team includes scenography by AMP, featuring Teresa L. Williams; costume design by Sarah Laux; lighting design by Natasha Katz; sound design and original composition by Palmer Hefferan; and projection design by Hannah Wasileski.

John Proctor is the Villain in London is a funny and incredibly interesting story about the power of young women as they question which stories become history. This production is bound to be an exciting night at the theatre for audiences.
