See Affluenza, Andy Sandberg’s dark comedic play exploring themes of wealth and the consequences of immense privilege at Riverside Studios. Book Affluenza tickets on London Theatre.

Set within the extreme wealth of the Hamptons, Affluenza is a play that begins after a teenager’s drunken car ride ends in devastation. As the repercussions of the event move into the courtroom, an extraordinary question is asked. Can a person who has grown up with so much privilege truly understand the difference between right and wrong?

This play is inspired by true events surrounding a controversial legal defence as it examines what happens when wealth and personal responsibility coincide. As the consequences of the accident extend beyond the night it occurred, Affluenza takes a hard look at who exactly bears the responsibility for the choices people make, and how ideas of money and entitlement are passed from one generation to the next.

The company includes Noah Schnapp (in his stage debut), Janette Manrara, Juliet Cowan, Wallis Currie-Wood, Rupert Young, and Donald Sage Mackay.

Andy Sandberg writes and directs the world premiere. The creative team includes set designer Charlie Corcoran, costume designer Hannah Schmidt, lighting designer Jack Weir, and sound designer Emily Drohan.

Affluenza in London launches Riverside Studios’ Mainstage Season 26/27, a programme of new plays exploring contemporary concepts. Balancing dark humour with difficult topics of justice and morality, Affluenza examines the system surrounding one privileged family. What happens when your money can protect you from the consequences of your own actions, even if those actions irreparably harm others?

Rather than offering easy answers to hard questions, this production encourages its audience to consider how deeply our privileges can shape our understanding of the world around us. By placing a family’s private choices against a larger systemic issue, the play turns one devastation into an examination of responsibility.
