About The Guilty
Following a sold-out run at the Donmar, The Guilty starring Russell Tovey (The History Boys, Angels in America, Being Human, The War Between the Land and the Sea) transfers to the West End.
Directed by Felix Barrett (Artistic Director of Punchdrunk) and written by award-winning writer Chloë Moss, The Guilty is a visceral and “thrilling shot of theatrical adrenaline” (The Standard). Packed with unsettling twists, psychological tension and edge-of-your-seat suspense – “no less than a white-knuckle ride” (The Guardian) with “not a moment that doesn’t grip” (The Stage).
Russell Tovey is troubled police officer Joe, stuck on desk duties, who takes a desperate 999 call from Emily. As he scrambles to decode fragmented clues from a woman in danger, a heart-stopping thriller unfolds. In a night filled with unsettling twists, Joe has a mounting sense that nothing is quite as it seems.
Based on the film Den Skyldige written by Gustav Möller and Emil Nygaard Albertsen and presented in association with David Litvak and Jeff Kleeman for Bold Films.
Opening at the Harold Pinter Theatre from 16 Jan 2027 for a strictly limited run.

This tight one-man show is based on the 2021 movie that starred Jake Gyllenhaal. If you saw that movie, as I have, this will be a very predicable and straight-forward version of that. The action (if you could all it that) all happens within a police emergency phone line with numerous characters on audio only, which may work for a film, but makes for a very challenging and ultimately disappointing transfer to theater. Tovey in the lead is ok but not great, usually a dependable strong actor, here he tends to overdo it when things get intense. Skip it.
What a nail biting performance left me shocked, emotional and on the edge of my seat and with the twist and turns, especially the reveal is a true masterpiece. One I didn't expect
This proved to be a masterclass in putting on a 60 minute thriller. The lighting was probably the best I’ve ever seen in a production - I rarely notice the lighting (which is probably not a bad thing as that means they’ve done a good job) but I noticed every lighting change here because single choice felt deliberate and noticeably altered the atmosphere. This, coupled with the sound effects and videography, made the show feel so intense that I realised I was holding my breath on multiple occasions! It would be remiss not to mention Russell Tovey. He gave a stellar performance from start to finish and I’m so grateful to have seen this live. I was genuinely on the edge of my seat for the entirety of the play. While the reveal at the end wasn’t what I expected (a different kind of ‘twist’), it certainly drew some gasps across the room. Yes, it did veer into soap opera territory on the odd occasion, but it also dealt with so many themes and topics, including the state of our society, the multi faceted role of emergency call centre staff and morality. A truly fascinating production and one not to miss.
