Emily Barber, Iwan Davies, Ian Drysdale, Ilan Galkoff, Eloka Ivo, Michael Simkins, Nicole Sloane, along with David Buttle, Amy Newton, Keanu Adolphus Johnson, Georgie Rhys, and Jacob Ethan Tanner, will join the previously announced Luke Evans and Penelope Wilton.

Michael Grandage directs the play that follows 50-year relationship between the Queen Mother and her loyal servant William "Billy" Tallon.

Grandage and Wilton will be reunited after previously collaborating on The *Chalk Garden, John Gabriel Borkman*, and *Hamlet*. Evans previously starred in productions of *Small Change* and *Piaf* at the [Donmar Warehouse](https://www.londontheatre.co.uk/theatres/donmar-warehouse), under Grandage's artistic directorship.

Loosely inspired by historical events, *Backstairs Billy* depicts the unusual friendship between Elizabeth Bowes-Lyon (aka the Queen Mother) and her faithful, mischievous, fun-loving page William Tallon (better known as Backstairs Billy) amidst a particularly challenging time for the Royal Family and for the country at large. 

During the viciously cold and stormy winter of 1979, unions across England went on strike. With labour disputes and political discord knocking at the door, the Queen Mother and Billy both will have to come to terms with the harsh realities beyond the luxurious world of Clarence House and the consequences that ensue.

The epitome of a loyal royal servant, William Tallon served the Queen Mother for over half a century. In fact, he began writing to the royal household at age 10, asking to work there. When he was 15, he became a junior assistant at Windsor Castle. From there, he worked his way up to becoming the most relied upon and favourite member of the Queen Mother’s royal entourage. He even received the extremely rare Royal Victorian Medal in gold in 2001. A longtime confidante and a faithful butler, Billy was an unforgettable character known for his campy, larger-than-life personality. 

*Backstairs Billy* is inspired by William Tallon’s highly unusual relationship with the Queen Mother, but it is a comedy, not a historical play. Playwright Marcelo Dos Santos presents a humorous and fictionalised interpretation of real people and real events.

## What to watch for

- Luke Evans began his career in theatre, but it is the first time he has returned to the stage in 15 years. Evans has performed in multiple West End musicals, including *Taboo, Rent, Miss Saigon,* and *Avenue Q*. 
- Dame Penelope Wilton is known for her role in *Downton Abbey* where she played a middle-class woman who often clashed with her more aristocratic in-laws. Now, she’s gone fully posh! In *Backstairs Billy*, the Olivier Award-winning actress portrays Elizabeth Bowes-Lyon, better known as the Queen Mother.
- Marcelo Dos Santos has been hailed as “an important new voice” by director Michael Grandage. *Backstairs Billy* marks Dos Santos’ West End debut.

The Duke Of York’s Theatre opened as the Trafalgar Square Theatre in 1892.The playhouse received its current name three years later in 1895, in honour of the future King George V. 

Famous productions to play at the Duke Of York’s Theatre include David Belasco’s *Madame Butterfly* in 1900 – Puccini was in the audience and famously turned the story into an opera. J. M. Barrie's famous creation *Peter Pan, or The Boy Who Wouldn’t Grow Up* opened at the theatre on 27 Dec. 1904.

Typically, the Duke of York's Theatre is home to short-running plays, with West End and Broadway stars appearing.

## Duke of York's Theatre Seating Information

The auditorium has three levels – Stalls, Royal Circle and Upper Circle.

The Stalls offer good legroom throughout, and the raking of the seats is very good, noticeably from Row D onwards. 

In the Royal Circles, there is no visual obstruction from the Upper Circle. 

The seats in the Upper Circle curve towards the stage. The final two rows of the Upper Circle are bench seats.
