Andrew Lloyd Webber

He’s here, the Phantom of the Opera… set in 19th-century Paris, the Andrew Lloyd Webber favourite tells the story of love triangle between the mysterious Phantom, young soprano Christine, and aristocratic suitor Raoul. The show is filled with romance, intrigue, and gothic horror – as well as costumes to die for.

Songs from the classic score include "Think of Me", "All I Ask of You", and "Masquerade". It’s London’s most sumptuous show after nearly 40 years of reigning over the West End and the iconic chandelier never fails to thrill!

Disney

The Disney classic has been the perfect family show for over a quarter of a century. The coming-of-age story of lion cub Simba, who must avenge his father’s death by defeating his wicked uncle (a bit like Hamlet with big cats), is filled with emotion as well as plenty of humour.

The evergreen score by Elton John and Tim Rice includes the hits “The Circle of Life”, “Can You Feel the Love Tonight”, and “Hakuna Matata” and the glorious production by Julie Taymor features a wondrous ensemble of over 200 puppets. You’ll roar with delight!

The Book of Mormon

Comedy
Musical

This American import by the team behind South Park is the West End’s rudest show and one of its funniest. Our heroes Elder Price and Elder Cunningham are posted to Uganda, where AIDS, civil war, and local dictators prevail and no one is interested in what they have to say – if only they’d received their dream posting of Orlando, Florida!

However, the friendship between the odd-couple rookie missionaries starts to blossom and they learn how to engage with the locals. It’s foul-mouthed and outrageous – and it also has plenty of heart.

Musical

The film broke box office records and the second instalment will be released later this year. It’s the perfect time to experience the glorious original for the first time or to revisit if it’s been a while. Stephen Schwartz’s musical is set in the magical land of Oz before Dorothy arrived and charts the unlikely friendship between green-skinned Elphaba and popular girl Glinda.

The show boasts fabulous songs and breathtaking visual wizardry, as well as clever political satire. You’re sure be sure to be changed “for good” by this wickedly enjoyably musical that’s helmed by two formidable female leads.

Les Misérables

Iconic
Popular

Now in its 40th year, this musical – one of the best-loved of all time – needs little introduction. The story of former convict Jean Valjean, which spans almost two decades of the early 19th century, remains extraordinarily moving and is filled with deeply moving musical numbers imbued with real operatic heft.

A true epic, the show explores themes including faith, justice, sacrifice, and revolutionary spirit, and is filled with unforgettable characters. It’s the West End’s longest-running musical for many reasons, not least the overwhelming sense of collective emotion at the end of every show.

Pop

The newest show on this list, MJ the Musical is now in its second year in the West End. Set during rehearsals for Michael Jackson’s 1992 Dangerous World Tour, Christopher Wheeldon’s production features dazzling choreography and all the King of Pop’s greatest hits, including “Beat It”, “Billie Jean”, and, of course, “Thriller”.

Wheeldon brilliantly captures the way in which Jackson’s creativity, musicality, and stage presence was second to none. The show also features a book by two-time Pulitzer Prize-winning playwright Lynn Nottage, which provides a unique insight into Jackson’s life beyond the stage.

The Mousetrap

Agatha Christie
Must see
Long-running show

You can’t get more quintessentially English than an Agatha Christie murder mystery and the grande dame of the West End has been playing since 1952. A group of people are gathered at a remote country house when they realise that there’s a murderer in their midst… each individual will have to keep all their wits about them if they want to survive.

It’s a truly historical piece of theatre that every theatregoer ought to see once in a lifetime. Whodunnit? You’ll have to find out for yourself!
