Suzie Miller’s electrifying and deeply thought-provoking legal drama, starring Rosamund Pike, is heading to the West End following its acclaimed premiere at the National Theatre earlier this year. Inter Alia will run at Wyndham’s Theatre, with Pike reprising her lead role.

Miller’s play is the eagerly awaited follow-up to the sensation that was Prima Facie, another legal drama, which was led by Jodie Comer. Now it’s Pike’s turn to impress as the compassionate judge and busy working mother whose values are tested when a situation at home completely rocks her life.

What is Inter Alia about?

Inter Alia follows the trailblazing female crown court judge Jessica Parks, who juggles a demanding career – in which she takes a sharp look at how the law treats cases involving sexual violence – with constant domestic duties. Her barrister husband Michael leaves the majority of the work to her, including raising their teenage son Harry.

Jessica’s worlds collide horribly when Harry attends a party and is then accused of rape by a female classmate. Suddenly her long-held commitment to justice and to her feminist principles come up against her instincts as a mother to protect her son. Miller’s scorching play examines the fatal flaws in the legal system, as well as consent, gender inequality, and the trials of modern parenthood.

Who wrote Inter Alia?

Inter Alia is the latest work by the pioneering Australian playwright Suzie Miller. She has previously worked as a lawyer and draws on her former profession in her insightful and sometimes shocking plays. Her previous work includes Reasonable Doubt.

Miller shot to fame thanks to her extraordinary one-woman show Prima Facie, which premiered in Australia in 2019 and then came to the West End with Jodie Comer in 2022. The Olivier and Tony Award-winning play centred on a defence barrister, Tessa, who has to navigate the legal system from a completely different angle when she herself is the victim of sexual assault.

When was Inter Alia first performed?

Inter Alia had its world premiere in 2025 at the National Theatre, directed by Justin Martin and starring Rosamund Pike as Jessica Parks in an incredible tour-de-force performance. The critically acclaimed run sold out, and the play was subsequently filmed and shown in cinemas by NT Live.

Who is in the creative team of Inter Alia?

Inter Alia is directed by the BAFTA-winning and Olivier-nominated Justin Martin. He previously co-directed The Jungle, Kyoto and Stranger Things: The First Shadow with Stephen Daldry, and he directed Prima Facie and The Fear of 13, starring Adrien Brody.

What are some fun facts about Inter Alia?

  • The show’s title is a Latin term meaning “among other things” that has a specific legal definition (just like Miller’s previous play Prima Facie) and also a thematic one, as it sums up Jessica’s feeling of existing in the cracks of everyone else’s needs.

  • Miller’s plays are closely based on the realities of the legal system, and the global success of Prima Facie actually led to changes in sexual assault trials and the subject being taught in schools.

  • Miller interviewed female judges and lawyers while writing Inter Alia to get their honest views on how they would feel if the justice system they worked in one day saw their own child on trial.

  • Pike’s remarkable performance in Inter Alia was a welcome return to the stage after a 14-year absence: she last did a UK tour of Ibsen’s Hedda Gabler, and before that starred opposite Judi Dench in Madame de Sade at the Donmar Warehouse.
