Studio Ghibli is a renowned Japanese animation film studio founded in 1985. They are known for creating imaginative movies, including *My Neighbour Totoro* and *Spirited Away*.

The Tony and Emmy-winning Hollywood actor is starring in Mark Rosenblatt’s provocative new play *Giant* at the Royal Court in London this autumn.

Royal Shakespeare Company and Neal Street Productions, in association with Hera Pictures, have announced the casting for the West End transfer of [*Hament*](https://www.londontheatre.co.uk/show/28318-hamnet) directed by Erica Whyman. The production will premiere at the Garrick Theatre, bringing the most significant box office advance in the theatre’s 134-year history.

Sarah Belcher (Joan), Will Brown (Burbage/Father John), Ajani Cabey (Hamnet), Frankie Hastings (Eliza/Customer), Karl Haynes (Ned), Alex Jarrett (Judith), Madeleine Mantock (Agnes Hathaway), Hannah McPake (Jude), Tom Varey (William Shakespeare), and Peter Wight (John/Will Kempe) will reprise their roles from the Royal Shakespeare Company production. The *Hamnet* play premiered in April 2023 at the Swan Theatre in Shakespeare’s hometown, Stratford-upon-Avon. The production now transfers to London’s West End for a limited 14-week engagement this autumn.

- Parts of *Hamnet* are based in fact: Shakespeare did have a son named Hamnet, who died at age 11 in 1596. The playwright wrote *Hamlet* four years later, but we'll never know whether the events are truly connected.
- *Hamnet* is getting the Hollywood treatment. Academy Award-winning director Chloé Zhao will direct and write a new screenplay for the adaption.
- William Shakespeare invented 1,700 words in the English language, including “critic” and “gossip.”
- Maggie O’Farrell’s novel won the National Book Critics Circle Award for Fiction and Women's Prize for Fiction in 2020. It was also named "Novel of the Year" at the Dalkey Literary Awards the following year.

The Garrick Theatre opened in 1889, and is named after actor David Garrick. When the theatre was built, architects discovered an underground river on the site!

The theatre became associated with comedy in 1982 with a four-year run of the farce *No Sex Please, We’re British*. This was the longest-running show at the Garrick, until J. B. Priestley’s *An Inspector Calls* transferred from the [Aldwych Theatre](https://www.londontheatre.co.uk/theatres/aldwych-theatre) in 1995 and resided for six years.

In recent years, a number of musicals have played here, including *A Little Night Music*, *Chicago*, and *The Scottsboro Boys*. In 2015, [Kenneth Branagh](https://www.londontheatre.co.uk/stars-on-stage/kenneth-branagh) took up residency at the Garrick for a year-long season of plays with his own theatre company.

The auditorium has three levels – Stalls, Dress Circle and Grand Circle. In the Stalls, the view of the top of the stage is slightly obscured by the overhang of the Dress Circle from Row N onwards. 

In the Dress Circle, the view of the stage is not obscured by the overhang of the Upper Circle, but the ceiling can feeel low for those in the last row. The seats are designed in a horseshoe shape around the theatre and the Dress Circle offers good sightlines.
