A new adaptation of Henrik Ibsen's Rosmersholm is set to open in the West End, starring Hayley Atwell and Tom Burke.

Adapted by Duncan Macmillan, writer of People Places and Things, the play examines a country in political flux, with John Rosmer faced with a decision between conservative traditions or more modern ideas of freedom.

Directed by Ian Rickson, Tom Burke will play John Rosmer (Johannes in the original), and Hayley Atwell will play his housekeeper Rebecca West.

Rosmersholm will run at the Duke of York's Theatre from 24th April, with tickets now on sale.

Tom Burke is known for his role on the BBC series The Musketeers, and has also appeared in productions of The Doctor's Dilemma, and The Cut. In 2008, he won an Ian Charleson Award for his role in the Donmar Warehouse production of Creditor, which was directed by his godfather Alan Rickman.

Hayley Atwell's recent London stage credits include Measure for Measure at the Donmar Warehouse, Dry Powder at the Hampstead Theatre, and A View from the Bridge at the Duke of York's in 2009. She also has a major role in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, playing Peggy Carter in several films.

Duncan Macmillan recently had huge success in both London and New York with his play People Places and Things. He also co-adapted and co-directed 1984 in the West End and on Broadway with Robert Icke.

Ian Rickson's West End credits include productions of Harold Pinter's The Birthday Party, Betrayal and Old Times, and Jez Butterworth's Jerusalem. His creative team will include set and costumes by Rae Smith, lighting by Neil Austin, music by Stephen Warbeck, sound by Gregory Clarke and casting, more of which is yet to be announced, by Amy Ball.

Rosmersholm is at the Duke of York's Theatre from 24th April.
