Numerous award-winning West End actors will join the ninth annual panto at the historic venue, with performances running from December 2024 to January 2025.

Get in, loser, we're going to London! The *Mean Girls* musical is set to make its London premiere at the [Savoy Theatre](https://www.londontheatre.co.uk/theatres/savoy-theatre) in June 2024, with exact performance dates to be announced.

Following a hit Broadway run from 2018-2020, *Mean Girls* now comes to the U.K. for the first time. The show is based on the 2004 movie about Cady Heron, a homeschooled teenager attending high school for the first time. She gets in with the Plastics — a popular clique consisting of airheaded Karen, gossipy Gretchen, and queen bee Regina — but drama ensues when she tries to take Regina down.

Tina Fey, who wrote the film's screenplay, also wrote the book for the stage show. Original music is by lyricist Nell Benjamin (*Legally Blonde*) and composer Jeff Richmond. Director/choreographer Casey Nicholaw (*The Book of Mormon*) rounds out the lead creative team.

Casting for *Mean Girls* in London has yet to be announced. The movie starred Lindsay Lohan, Rachel McAdams, Amanda Seyfried, Lacey Chabert, and Fey. The Broadway production originally starred Erika Henningsen, Taylor Louderman, Ashley Park, and Kate Rockwell.

Tina Fey’s stage adaptation of her smash-hit 2004 movie *Mean Girls* debuted on Broadway at the August Wilson Theatre in 2018, following a pre-Broadway run at the National Theatre in Washington D.C. The show received a staggering twelve Tony Awards and ten Drama Desk Awards.

The movie starred Lindsay Lohan, Rachel McAdams, Amanda Seyfried, Amy Poehler, and Tina Fey herself. The movie grossed $24.4 million in its opening weekend and has since become a cultural phenomenon. The *Mean Girls* musical will be released as a film in 2024, starring Reneé Rapp as Regina George, who also played the role on Broadway.

## What to watch for

- *Mean Girls* was originally released in cinemas in 2004, and technology has changed a lot since then. Tina Fey researched modern ways teenage girls can be mean to one another when bringing *Mean Girls* to the stage and updated the book to incorporate social media and smartphones.
- The film introduced popular catchphrases like "On Wednesdays, we wear pink," "You can't sit with us," and “I want my pink shirt back!”. These lines all made it into the musical.
- The line "On October 3rd, he asked me what day it was" became iconic and is celebrated as "Mean Girls Day" by fans every year.

Nicole Scherzinger returns to the West End this September, starring as the immortal Norma Desmond in a new production of Andrew Lloyd Webber’s legendary Sunset Boulevard, directed by Jamie Lloyd.

The Savoy Theatre opened on 21 Oct. 1929. The building was known for being the first public building to be lit entirely by electricity. 

When a fire ravaged the theatre in 1990, destroying the interior, it was meticulously restored by Sir William Whitfield to the original 1929 designs. The theatre reopened on 19 Jul. 1993.

The D’Oyly Carte Opera Company played several seasons at the theatre over the past 20 years, their last production being *HMS Pinafore* in 2003. 

The theatre has also housed several musicals, including *She Loves Me* in 1994 starring John Gordon Sinclair and Ruthie Henshall, and has played host to musicals exclusively since 2006. 

## Savoy Theatre Seating Information

The auditorium has three levels - Stalls, Dress Circle and Grand Circle.

In the Stalls, the legroom throughout is very good, and the seating is well raked to ensure good views.

In the Dress Circle, the overhang of the Grand Circle affects the view from Row K onwards. The amount of legroom also decreases the further back you sit.

The Grand Circle feels rather far from the stage.
