Michael Jackson musical, ‘MJ’, to open in the West End in 2024
The musical will play at the Prince Edward Theatre.
The Michael Jackson musical, MJ, will open in the West End in 2024. MJ will begin performances at the Prince Edward Theatre in March 2024.
MJ centres around the creation of Michael Jackson’s 1992 Dangerous World tour. As Jackson sings, he gradually reveals his memories and key moments in his career come to life.
MJ opened on Broadway in December 2021 and won four Tony Awards, including Best Actor in a Musical for Myles Frost. In a five-star review on New York Theatre Guide, they said: “While Jackson's story is flawed, it's too complicated for anyone who hasn't danced in his shoes. MJ The Musical, however, is the perfect salutation to the life of an imperfect but gifted icon.”
MJ features a story by the two-time Pulitzer Prize-winning writer Lynn Nottage, and direction and choreography by Christopher Wheeldon. MJ features scenic design by Derek McLane, costume design by Paul Tazewell, lighting design by Natasha Katz, and sound design by Gareth Owen.
“As a Black musician and a pioneering voice in the music industry, Michael Jackson demanded inclusion, broke incredible barriers and in the process made indelible music that continues to resonate, delight and move listeners today. I am drawn to his complicated, singular and uncompromising creative process, and to understand where, why and how he made his music,” said Nottage.
MJ London casting will be announced at a later date.
